Zammie and Kyla looked
around. They saw people beginning to gather around the large courthouse near
the center of town. The courthouse had several wide steps leading up to the
front doors. On those steps stood a white man wearing a navy coat and holding a
piece of parchment that he was reading. The town’s people were gathering around
him. Kyla and Zammie squeezed their way through the crowds up towards the
courthouse steps.
They saw another white man leading a young black woman out
of the courthouse and onto the top step for everyone to see. The woman was
holding a baby girl in her arms and had her six-year-old son at her side. The
woman’s eyes were cast down to the ground, but the young boy was scanning the
crowd as if he was looking for someone.
“Ladies
and gentlemen, our first item up for sale today is the healthy and fertile
woman you see before you,” said the man with the parchment. “Only twenty-five
years old, still capable of having more children. She can cook, sew, chop wood,
and much more. I will start the bidding at one hundred dollars."
