Nearly two more hours had
passed since Harriet had heard the dogs. Her group had sloshed back and forth
over several creeks, but they now had to find dry land to alleviate some of the
pain caused by the cold water. They found a very old wagon trail that led
through a thick section of tall oak and hackberry trees. Harriet could tell it
was an old and unused trail because grass has been allowed to grow over top of it
again. She figured such a rarely used path would be safe enough for them to
follow at this hour without being spotted.
Then the raspy baying of the Bloodhound rang out again like
a fire siren off in the night. The group stopped and tried to gauge how close
the animal was to them.
“Oh, why won’t they leave us alone?” cried Jane.
“They gonna get us,” said Henry. “They gonna tear us to
pieces this time, I know it!”
Harriet looked around for a place to hide, but what good
would that do? She could hear the panting of the dog now and the pounding of
its paws on the grassy path behind them.
It
was within a hundred yards and closing fast.
“You
all run,” said Robert. “I’ll stay and fight it off.”
“You
crazy!” said Henry. “That animal will kill you!”
“Get
outta here!” Robert yelled.
Harriet
began pushing everyone else to run. “Let’s go!” she said. Her voice held with
conviction, but her heart was aching at the thought of Robert’s sacrifice.
Zammie took two steps when something caught his eye in the
moonlight.
“Where you going, Zammie?” asked Kyla.
Zammie picked up a large branch that had fallen from a
tree. He ran it back to Robert and held it up to him.
