“Can you shoot an arrow?” she asked me.
“Yeah . . . I think so.” How embarrassing. Twelve years old and I can’t shoot an arrow.
We stopped by Oguina’s wigwam where she gathered her own bow and arrows, and then we walked over to the open field where the young boys practiced archery. We stood about twenty yards from a line of tall pine trees. Between two of the pine trees was a ragged animal fur tied up and stretched out making a nice target.
“Let’s see if you can hit that pelt,” said Tisqauntum.
I tried to pull an arrow out of the quiver, but like a dog chasing its tail, as I moved around to grab one, the arrows moved away as well.
“Use your right arm,” said Tisquantum “Reach over your shoulder and put the arrow in the bow. One motion. Smooth and fluid. Oguina, you go first.”
I watched as Oguina took a tall, angled stance, staring down the pelt with her left shoulder closest to the target. She held out the bow with her left hand and reached behind her right shoulder with her right hand, grabbed an arrow, and pulled it tight on the string in one elegant movement. I understood now why so many of the men had the hair on the right side of their face cut shorter than the left. They didn’t want it getting in the way of firing an arrow.
SWOOSH!
Oguina let go of the arrow and it zipped in a dead straight line right into the animal skin.
“Wow, good job,” I said.
She smiled at me. “You try now.”
